Make Halloween Safe and Enjoyable

Halloween is the time for fun and frolic as everyone is in a
festive mood. Kids and adults enjoy the crisp air, the fun
costumes, and of course, the candies. All this goes to make
the traditional All Hallow's Eve a night to remember!
Unfortunately, many a Halloween have turned into a
nightmare. Year after year, many children end up victims of
accidents, some even quite serious, instead of merrily
eating candy in the safety of their own homes. You need to
educate yourself and your children about the appropriate
safety rules so that your Halloween is a safe Halloween.

Halloween takes place at the end of October when most parts
of the country are experiencing chilly weather. The costume
for your child must be planned carefully to protect him from
the cold. Long sleeves, long pants and layers of clothes are
a good idea accompanied by athletic or walking shoes. In
fact, it might be better if you can plan an alternate event
if the weather gets too bad instead of having your kids
traipsing around the neighborhood for the traditional trick
or treats. For instance, attending a neighborhood or
community Halloween party would be a fun alternative for the
entire family and your kids can be safe from the cold, wet
weather.

The reason why so many accidents happen at Halloween is that
the kids go for their trick or treats rounds after dark
wearing usually dark costumes. This can make them virtually
invisible to the driver of a car, especially in bad weather.
Encourage your kids to leave around dusk, instead of trick
or treating late at night and arm them with flashlights. A
light will not only illuminate them and prevent car
accidents; it will also save them from stepping on something
dangerous or tripping and falling in the dark.

Many costumes now come with reflective strips sewn into
them. Alternatively, you can apply those reflective strips
to your child's costume yourself. Do not forget to apply the
back of the costume with appropriate reflective properties.
You can use flickering jewelry and pins because they serve
as decoration in addition to being a safety feature. If your
child wears a mask, make sure they can see properly through
the eyeholes. Also, ensure that the holes around the nose or
mouth are in place so that your child can breathe normally.

Finally, all candy needs to be inspected before a child
consumes anything. If candy is open or unwrapped,
immediately dispose of the treats. After all items
have been checked and everything is verified to be
wrapped, you can enjoy a safe Halloween! This holiday is
a favorite of children of all ages, but can quickly turn
into a nightmare if the proper safety precautions are not
taken.
