Dogs are the descendents of wolves. Remains of a 14,000 year
old dog was discovered in Germany. Other countries that have
found such remains and contributed to the study of history
of dogs are Israel and Idaho. It is difficult to rule out
the fact that dog must have been the first domesticated
animal.
Some say that domesticated early dogs looked like the
dingoes found in Australia. Eurasian stock and pre-
Columbian dogs found in America are the ancestors of all
dogs. The European breeds of dogs consist of terriers,
British hounds and shepherd dogs. Historical remains prove
that dogs were found in all parts of the world even in
olden days. Basenji is considered as the oldest breed of
dogs. It was originally found in Africa and was used for
hunting.
Dogs are domesticated carnivorous animals from the Canidae
family. Other animals in this family are fox and jackal. The
typical characteristics of this family are that the animals
have large canine teeth, long muzzle, long tail and canine
attributes. Dogs are found in almost all parts of the world
just like human beings. Their subspecies do not look alike
and have lots of variable characteristics. All these make
dogs distinguishable from other members of their family.
Dogs are bred and put to different uses by humans. That is
why they are bred to fulfill various needs and purposes of
the people. Dogs are used for games, as guides, as draft
animals and as companions. They are considered as man's
best friend because they are faithful in nature. They have
a very strong sense of smell. This quality of theirs is
exploited to the hilt by man. Their hearing power is also
far better than us. Dogs help is sought for hunting,
detecting and locating foods, drugs, explosives, and
luggage. The breeds of dogs used as guides and hunters are
the German shepherd, the collie and the St. Bernard. The
toy dogs used as pet include the Pomeranian, the pug and
the Pekingese. Some of the other commonly known breeds of
dogs are the bulldog, the Boston terrier, the Dalmatian,
the chow chow and the poodle.
Dogs are prone to diseases so need to be vaccinated
frequently. Some diseases can spread to humans as well.
Most common of these diseases are rabies, distemper,
leptospirosis and canine hepatitis.
